What are cookies

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer while you browse a website or use a web application. These files contain various types of information intended to enhance a website’s functionality (such as online purchases or customizing messages based on your preferences), collect statistical data, and generally improve your browsing experience.

Types of cookies and purposes

There are different types of cookies, which are classified according to their characteristics and methods of use, as outlined below:

Session cookies / Persistent cookies

Session cookies are temporarily stored in the computer’s memory while visiting a website (for example, to keep track of the selected language). Session cookies are stored for a short period of time and are deleted when the browser is closed.

Persistent cookies, on the other hand, remain on the computer for a longer period of time, depending on the expiration date set when the cookie is created. These cookies allow websites to remember information during subsequent visits by the user, for example by avoiding the need to re-enter login credentials.

First-party cookies / Third-party cookies

First-party cookies are set directly by the websites themselves (with a domain matching the one shown in the browser’s address bar) and can only be read by those websites.

Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are set by domains different from the one shown in the browser’s address bar, meaning by organizations other than the website owners. These cookies are used, for example, to collect information for advertising and content personalization purposes, as well as to track visits to the website, and may therefore be considered "third-party cookies".

Technical cookies / Profiling cookies

Technical cookies are essential for the proper functioning of a website or application: without them, the website may not function correctly or certain features may be completely unavailable.

Profiling cookies are used to collect and store information about visitors (for example, pages visited, searches performed, etc.) in order to provide more targeted advertising messages aligned with their interests.
